- Son of Thomas Barton (1833-1893).
- Married, on 9 December 1909, Gertrude Frances Crofts Preston.
- Has an entry on ThePeerage.com here, which gives his wife's maiden name and the dates of their marriage and his death.
- Lived at Botcherby Grange, according to ThePeerage.com
- Died 30 November 1917, killed in action in World War I.
He is mentioned a good deal in the will of his Uncle
Robert Barton (1828-1917), who was going to bequeath his properties at Barrockstown and The Mount to Bertie, but sadly he (and his brother) died in service only months later, and probably never claimed any of his inheritance. Presumably his wife Gertrude inherited the lot. His death is mentioned in the
Carlisle Journal, 4 March 1919, p2 , where it says that his estate was valued at £19,698.
Memorial
Bertie and his brother Henry attended Carlisle Grammar School for Boys, and their deaths are commemorated on its
war memorial. I'm grateful to Sarah Lee for providing this information.
